Biography
Michael Natan, Ph.D., is President of Oxonica, Inc., the wholly-owned US subsidiary of Oxonica plc, a nanotechnology company publicly traded on the London AIM stock market. In December, 2005, Oxonica plc acquired Nanoplex Technologies, Inc., where Michael served as Chief Executive Officer and President and was a co-founder. The company was founded in early 2002 to exploit commercial opportunities associated with novel, optically-addressed metal nanoparticles. Oxonica Inc. is now developing commercial products for the medical diagnostic market based on those technologies. From 1999-2001, Michael was the Chief Technical Officer of SurroMed, Inc. where he led a team of 50 scientists and engineers focused on biomarker discovery. During Nanoplex’s incubation in 2003-2004, he also served as SurroMed’s Vice President, Business Development, where he was responsible for deals with Merck, Bayer, and several other pharma/biotech companies. Prior to joining SurroMed, Dr. Natan was an Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor of Chemistry at The Pennsylvania State University. During that time, he received fellowships from the Beckman and Sloan Foundations, and also founded Auspex Technologies, L.L.C., an IP holding company focused on nanotechnologies developed in his academic laboratories. Dr. Natan earned his B.S. degree in chemistry from Yale University cum laude with Honors (1981), a Ph.D. in chemistry from M.I.T. (1986), and was an NIH postdoctoral fellow at Northwestern University. He currently serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Gordon Research Conferences and the Enabling Bioanalytical Technology study section at NIH.
